Webinar: Mistakes, Mishaps, and Misconceptions

August 13, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

This is the 3rd in our FLEXIBLE MINDSETS series, Creating Safety for Children to Ask Questions, Make Mistakes & Take Risks for Learning.
In this webinar, we will be discussing mistakes, mishaps, and misconceptions. Fixed mindsets invoke a desire to avoid mistakes, thereby narrowing our experiences and shutting down learning. We briefly review why mistakes are important for strengthening neural pathways and opening the window for learning. We dig deeper into the value of mistakes for: opening our minds to possibilities; taking ownership of our learning; acquiring new strategies; developing sound reasoning; being resilient; clarifying goals; drawing on our creativity; and inspiring others.

Our speaker, Developmental Psychologist, Dr. Julie Dunstan, has worked for more than 3 decades in both early childhood and learning-related settings. She has conducted public policy research on child development, family needs, addictions, learning differences and general education and has served on numerous professional bodies.
Julie has taught undergraduate courses in psychology, and lectured at the graduate level in psychology, education and organizational development. She has presented at international conferences. Julie recently co-authored a chapter for, and assisted with the editing of, Dr. Lynn Meltzer’s book Executive Function in Education (2018).
Julie has driven the development of innovative programs including the ICAN Programme for children with math-related difficulties and the I-PLAY Programme which promotes phonological skills in preschool. Most recently, she retired as The Reading Clinic’s Executive Director to spearhead reFLEXionsTM, an initiative designed to develop Flexible Mindsets: the journey of self-directed learning. The reFLEXionsTM team is is conducting longitudinal research on emerging executive function processes, and has created resources for families and schools. Julie believes all learners can develop a sense of competence and be adaptive in responding to a complex and ever-changing world.
