Webinar: Reading, Math, and Language: What Do They All Have in Common

March 24, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

In recent years there has been a considerable amount of research into how we learn and retain math procedures and concepts. In particular, as we have learned about what areas in the brain are activated in various ways depending on how and what we are reading, we are also learning more about how math is processed in our brains. At Carnegie Melon Institute researchers have been able to show the process our brain goes through as we solve a math problem, either computation or a word problem. Researchers at Stanford have identified brain regions that affect how progress in math and other researchers have shown that math and phonics are related.
Nancy says, in this webinar I will briefly go over some of the research and then try to relate what we have learned and are still learning about why reading and language should be as much a part of mathematics instruction as math itself. We will explore some approaches to teaching math, based on experience, that can be of help to teachers. We will also look at some websites and apps that are teacher friendly and easily accessed.
