SCATTERED & BRILLIANT: EXECUTIVE FUNCTION & THE GIFTED CHILD:
Difficulty starting a task; staying focused on non-preferred tasks; and great ideas without follow-through; may indicate weak executive skills. For our brightest students, these same traits might be signs of deep creative thinking. Delay, discrepancy, or disability—how might we unravel the differences? This presentation describes how executive functions may manifest in our students with high potential and how to support our students to understand their strengths so they may adapt to their environment.

Cynthia Z. Hansen, M.Ed., ET/P is an Educational Therapist/Professional in private practice specializing in gifted and creative individuals with executive function delays, ADHD, dyslexia and complex learning profiles. An award-winning educator, SENG Model Parent Group facilitator and advocate, Ms. Hansen consults with public and private schools in addition to her national recognition as a speaker on issues facing gifted and twice-exceptional learners, their families, and collaborators.
A California credentialed educator for over 35 years, Cindy was initiated into the world of gifted education by her two twice exceptional boys, who became her guideposts throughout her post-graduate studies. She received her Master of Education and Teaching Certificates from UCLA, her post-Masters Certificate in Gifted and Talented Education at UCSB and is currently pursuing her doctorate at Bridges Graduate School for Cognitive Diversity in Education. Cindy is president of Tri-County GATE Council, an affiliate of the California Association for the Gifted, on the board of the Association of Educational Therapists, and the advisory board for “The G Word” movie due for release in 2021.
